In this paper, the Variable Structure Control (VSC) method is integrated with a nonlinear suboptimal control method based on Control Lyapunov Function (CLF). Nonlinear, variable-structure control theory is employed for series capacitor control and braking resistor control to improve the transient stability of a single machine infinite-bus (SMIB) system.
